Touchscreen UIs, and Interactive Content

Touchscreen Applications*

We design and produce touchscreen applications for public events, showrooms and visitor centres. Unlike many touchscreens you may have experienced at events, we focus on content and the people who will be using them. Many organisers and businesses who have bought expensive plush new hardware in the past have ended up being disappointed with the actual content, with UIs which are quite often boring, or just do not work. This is often caused by budgets being over spent on hardware and installation. At LightCauldron we work the other way around, we only focus on the interactive design and its content - the part which actually engages with the user - we have a philosophy hardware should be secondary. Consider that your visitors have not come to see bespoke new terminals, rather they have come to be amused, enlightened and informed. We are not about profit, we want people to have enjoyed the experience of our interactives.

Touchscreen applications can include animation, to simple games, information, visualisation and more.

*Please note that we are not able to supply touchscreen hardware directly, and any service provided would not include onsite hardware installation or IT support.

Case study - Brockhole Visitor Centre, Lake District Government

Mike Clarke the Commercial Manager at Brockhole Visitor Centre asked us to produce a new user interface (UI) for their existing touchscreens. Brockhole Visitor Centre was undergoing building works with a new gift shop, and visitor centre. The improvement works were taking place as Brockhole had become an official cruise stop along Lake Windermere. With visitor numbers expected to rise, we had the honourable position to entertain and inform visitors with our UI and interactives.

One of the key aims were to make the UI as simple and user friendly as possible, as it would be used by all ages. The the other to make it fun and enjoyable, so accessibility and child friendliness were key. But the limited budget had to include at least 3 new games, 6 quizzes, Events pages (by calendar), some general info on things to see and do, interactive map, a UI design, plus a site visit to help install the UI on their existing touchscreens. Also it had to be possible to update info including the quizzes, and as it was unlikely that IT personnel would be available onsite anytime to do this, so it was essential that we provide some help documentation.

The final product although simple, meet both the budget and the aims we set out to achieve. But at the same time it was also fun and functional to use. And we are confident that Brockhole has received a great value package with us, and should get many years use out of it. We hope Brockhole will return to us for new content in future.
